In 2019, The Whole Vashon Project was created as a way to motivate our Vashon island community to work on the climate crisis, for the sake of our children and their future.

In 2020, five thousand copies of The Whole Vashon Catalog, a community review of the “green goals” for Vashon businesses and non-profits, was published and distributed for free around the island.

This outstanding 92-page creation also includes contributions from Vashon writers, artists, designers, photographers, and island historians, as well as watercolor paintings of local birds by Vashon 4th graders.

The vision has been to inspire other communities to take on similar sorts of commitments.

During the time of peak activity, up until December 2024, the Whole Vashon Project team produced full-page ads in the Vashon Beachcomber, educating about the environment. There were bi-weekly 800-word articles in the paper, and a bi-monthly newsletter advertising the work and needs of the nearly 30 Vashon environmental non-profits profiled in the Catalog. There was also a website, which is presently paused as different organizations augmented their own work.

Environmental awareness increased on the island, particularly supported by the outstanding nonprofit ZeroWaste Vashon, which remains one of the most visible and active environmental organizations on the island, along with the Vashon Land Trust.

Beachcomber articles still appear from time to time and there is a Whole Vashon Project Facebook group that remains active, with more than 600 members. The focus is on GOOD NEWS from the U.S. and around the world—important to celebrate during when the climate crisis is ignored by our government.
